Weddings at Bolton School

I have pulled together a Bolton School Wedding Guide with photos and information about this stunning wedding venue in Bolton. I hope you find it useful!

As a wedding photographer in the North West, I am absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to fabulous wedding venues. That being said, if you asked me to choose my favourites, Bolton School is always in my top 3. I have photographed several weddings at the school over the years, and I always love working there.

This stunning venue is a working Independent School, set in 32 acres of well manicured grounds. The school’s roots trace back to 1516. The site where the school currently stands was established in the late 1800’s. As such, it is one of the oldest wedding venues in Lancashire. Not only are you surrounded by the fabulous history of this Grade II listed building, the campus boasts some fantastic modern architecture as well. The contemporary Arts Centre which has an incredible vaulted ceiling, and the glass fronted Riley Centre.

The wedding team are super lovely, and ensure that everything is perfect for you on your big day. Nothing is too much trouble for you and your guests. Every wedding I’ve been to has run seamlessly and seemed effortless.

Choosing a wedding venue is a very personal thing, much like buying a house or choosing your wedding dress. You’ll try one and just get all the feels. Bolton School has all the feels for me.

Wedding Ceremony Options

Bolton School offers two unique wedding ceremony options. The first (and my favourite) is to tie the knot in the huge Harry Potter-esque Great Hall situated in the main school building. It has a stunning vaulted ceiling, and all the high windows make the room light and airy and perfect for photographs. There is a traditional church organ and plenty of space for all of your guests without feeling crowded. You’ll also spot this location on TV quite often too, as the school is used for filming which is quite exciting as you’ can tell everyone ‘I got married in that room!’

The second option is to hold your ceremony in the Banqueting Hall within the Arts Centre. This is a more intimate setting. It also has a gorgeous vaulted ceiling, yet is a modern room. The Banqueting Hall is also the location for all wedding receptions.

Bolton School Wedding Photo Locations

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to your wedding photographs, as Bolton School has so many gorgeous backdrops! The Headmaster’s Garden is close to the Arts Building. This is perfect for your small group/family shots, as it is just around the corner from where your guests will be enjoying their reception drinks whilst you have your photos taken!

Although I’m not a lover of taking reams of group shots, I do like to take a photo of everyone who is at the wedding. I take this just before everyone is called in to be seated for the wedding breakfast. The patio just outside the Arts Centre is perfect. Firstly it is where everyone gathers in order to be seated, and secondly, there are a couple of steps which means you can see everyone! We have lots of fun, and I think it’s nice to see everyone’s lovely happy faces together.

The main school building and it’s courtyard provide the iconic ‘Bolton School’ photos – a very grand, almost castle-like backdrop. I use this location for my couple shots of just the two of you. Photos here look stunning both on beautifully sunny days, but also with a moody grey sky if you don’t get the weather.

Photo locations

If the weather is less than favourable (and lets face it, this is the North West…you have to plan for these things!) then you have nothing to worry about at all. There are so many incredible locations inside as well. The Great Hall and the staircase leading up to it with it’s huge stain glass windows (perfect for photos of your wedding dress if it has a train that we can lay out trailing down the steps..swoon!) and also the stone archway inside. Plus, I’m always happy to venture outside with you even if it is raining… as long as you’re game, I am!

Bolton School Wedding Reception Options

As I mentioned above, all wedding receptions at Bolton School take place in the contemporary Arts Building. It has a large Banqueting Hall with a beautiful wooden vaulted ceiling. Head to the right of the room, up some stairs to the glass fronted bar area, overlooking the Hall. Next, head outside onto the red carpet, and the patio area where your guests can enjoy reception drinks and canapés while you have your photos taken!

Talking of canapés, I can highly recommend the mini Yorkshire puddings with beef and horseradish – yum!

The wedding breakfast is a 3 course meal with wine, and an optional cheese course too! I’ve been lucky to have been provided with the meal by some of my couples, and the food was delicious.

I definitely recommend hiring the sparkly lights to go behind your top table – this makes your speech photos look lovely.

Bolton School has a resident DJ. You are able to provide your own entertainment if you choose to do so too.

The evening buffet always goes down a treat as your guests work up an appetite throwing some shapes on the dance floor. Try the succulent wild boar burgers. These are definitely a winner (unless you’re a veggie.. there are plenty of other options too!)

Bolton School Wedding Capacity

It can hold weddings of up to 130 guests in the day, and 180 guests for your evening reception.

Your Bolton School Wedding Photographer

6 GREAT reasons why you should choose me to be your Bolton School wedding photographer:

  1. I’ve worked here several times so know all the best locations for photographs and have experience of how weddings work at this venue.
  2. Although I’ve worked here before, there are new opportunities to explore around every corner. I never stop looking for new ways to be creative.
  3. My heart and soul goes into every single wedding I ever attend. I hope like with many of my previous couples, you’ll come away from your day thinking of me as more of a friend with a camera than your photographer! My aim is to be your favourite wedding guest!
  4. I will never pose your guests, I try to blend in and document everything as it happens. Rather than staged shots and cheesy poses, I prefer to capture the moments and tell your story as it unfolds.
  5. I capture meaningful photos of your day taken in a way that your attention is just where it should be during your wedding – not on the camera but on each other.
  6. I aim to seek out the most precious and often overlooked elements of the day – the tiny details that bring memories back to life years down the line.
